Remembering the 23-Year-Old Woman Left Permanently Disabled After Attack

SIVE TOTO WAS ONLY 23 WHEN AN ATTACK LEFT HER PERMANENTLY DISABLED

Sivenathi “Sive” Toto was only 23 years old when an alleged attack in George changed the course of her life forever.

What began as a conflict involving her boyfriend reportedly ended with Sive suffering life-changing injuries that left her dependent on her family for almost every aspect of daily life.

The incident happened in August 2022 in Lawaaikamp, George, according to reports.

According to accounts from Sive’s family, her boyfriend had earlier been involved in a fight with another man.

It was later alleged that the man involved in the confrontation went looking for Sive after the fight.

At the time, Sive’s boyfriend was reportedly not at home, while she was sleeping in an outside room.

Family accounts allege that Sive was taken from the property and assaulted before being driven away in a bakkie.

She was eventually left near a petrol station.

The circumstances surrounding the incident and the allegations made about the attack have been part of the family’s long-running search for justice.

Sive survived the ordeal, but the consequences were devastating.

She suffered severe brain damage and later experienced a stroke.

The injuries affected her ability to communicate and move independently. She can no longer walk on her own and relies on a wheelchair.

She also requires assistance with many everyday activities and ongoing care from those around her.

For her family, the impact has extended far beyond the initial incident.

Her mother reportedly had to leave her  job so that she could become Sive’s full-time caregiver.

Jobs

What had once been a young woman’s ordinary hopes for the future suddenly became a life centred around rehabilitation, care and the challenges that come with permanent disability.

Before the attack, Sive reportedly dreamed of becoming a businesswoman.

At just 23, she had her whole future ahead of her.

Today, instead of pursuing those ambitions independently, she depends heavily on her family for support and care.

Her story is a reminder of how violence can have consequences that continue long after an incident itself is over.

For survivors who suffer permanent injuries, the effects can include physical disability, changes to employment, financial pressure and the emotional strain placed on entire families.

Years after the incident, Sive’s family continues to live with the consequences of what happened to her.

Her mother has taken on the demanding role of full-time caregiver, while Sive’s future remains shaped by the injuries she suffered.

The family’s story also highlights the importance of support for people living with permanent disabilities and for relatives who become caregivers after traumatic events.

Sive survived.

But surviving did not mean returning to the life she had before.

At only 23 years old, she was left facing challenges that no young person should have to endure.

Her story continues to raise questions about justice, support for survivors and the lasting consequences that families can face after violent attacks.
